  15. Windows NT maintains default administrative shares that cannot be
  16. removed permanently. These shares are created for the Windows NT root
  17. directory where the system files are kept and for the root of each
  18. hard drive partition. The shares have a dollar sign ($) suffix, are 
  19. invisible to network browsing, and are only accessible to accounts
  20. with administrator privileges on the particular machine. For example,
  21. you might have the following default shares:

  23.    WINNT$
  24.    C$
  25.    D$
  26.  
  27. You can disable these shares, but only for the current session. When
  28. you restart Windows NT, the shares will be re-enabled. You cannot
  29. change the permissions on these shares anytime. The following message
  30. is displayed if you attempt to do so:

  32.    This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions
  33.    cannot be set.
